QUOTE OF THE MONTH...

“There is no such thing as bad publicity, except your own obiturary.”

Brendan Behan, Irish author and dramatist 1923-1964

“The system runs the business, the people run the system.” So says one of the world’s most avid proponents of the business franchise format and author of the best-selling business book, the E-Myth. At 73, Michael Gerber is no stranger to the struggles and challenges facing small businesses today. His raison d’etre is to help business-minded individuals avoid the many pitfalls that await them shortly after they are struck by what he refers to as an ‘entrepreneurial seizure’; over a thirty year period, to date, no less than 70,000 client companies have benefited from his insights and sage-like wisdom.

Having read the E-Myth, fascinated by what it had to say about setting up and running a business, and impressed by its in-depth commentary on the business franchise format, founder of specialist UK franchising PR firm, Matt Pigott, travelled to LA to hear Michael speak.

Says Matt: “Michael Gerber is a master of business writing. I was first influenced by his work many years ago. The E-Myth shatters traditional entrepreneurial beliefs and helped me dramatically re-think my own business strategy. Meeting him was a thrill, and the whole seminar in LA gave me a valuable insight into successful business practice. I would urge all small business owners to read a copy of the E-Myth, and in particular those within the franchise industry. Gerber writes passionately about franchising and, when he spoke to me in LA, it was obvious he has a great deal of experience in this sector.”

Adds Matt: “The E-Myth is a life changing book. It’s full of examples of people who set up their own businesses, only to find that they have become slaves to a new regime – their own! Instead of having a reliable job and a regular salary, they realise they have taken on four or five jobs, ones they have little or no experience in. What Michael Gerber says about the people who fall into this trap is that they make the all too common mistake of working in the business when they should really be working on the business. They become their own bookkeeper, accountant, IT support, business development manager, chauffeur...you name it. When you’re changing hats that many times a day, it’s not fun. Michael helps people get out of that sort of rut.”
